Agents
Since unlocking every agent isn’t as simple as flipping a switch, you need to know you’re making the right choice with which you select. Being fragged 15 times in a row by an expert Viper player doesn’t mean she’s right for you, after all. And that’s where this page comes in…“Think you can keep up? Who am I kidding? You know you can't keep up.”

The basics…
What are agents?
Agents are the characters you play in VALORANT. Riot generally releases new agents every three to four months.
There are 22 agents in total: Brimstone, Phoenix, Sage, Sova, Viper, Cypher, Reyna, Killjoy, Breach, Omen, Jett, Raze, Skye, Yoru, Astra, KAY/O, Chamber, Neon, Fade, Harbor, Gekko, and Deadlock.
All VALORANT agents are the same height in-game, for the sake of fair competition. Every agent also has their own unique abilities, which range from realistic flash grenades to futuristic weaponry, and even magical abilities.
Every agent falls into one of four roles or classes:
- Controller – agents best suited to set their team up for success.
- Duelist – agents best suited to the front lines and seeking out head-on duels.
- Initiator – agents best suited to help their team capture contested ground.
- Sentinel – agents best suited for intel and guarding their team’s flanks.
How to choose the right agent
The right agent and player combo creates a symbiosis that can totally change your VALO experience. So picking the best agent for your style is a crucial choice.
But with so many agents to choose from, how do you pick which is worth your time?
Simple – do your research, find out how you like to play, target an agent that feels like a good fit and give them a go.
This page is your hub of all things VALORANT agents. A compilation of insights from the most dedicated VALO players and wiki contributors to help you make the best agent choice for you.
(or it’s just something cool to read, whatever floats your boat, Holmes.)
Unlocking agents
Newcomers have five base agents to get started in VALORANT. In order from most novice-friendly to least, those agents are Brimstone, Phoenix, Sage, Jett, and Sova.
You’ll need to unlock other agents by spending 8000 Kingdom Credits (earned by playing the game) or 1000 VALORANT points (purchased with real-world money).
New players can also complete the Welcome Contract to unlock two agents of their choice. No, all agents are not free.
Got an Xbox Game Pass? Only then can you unlock all VALO’s agents for free (lucky devil!). Just grant Riot Games permission to access your Xbox profile, load up VALORANT, and you’ll have unlocked every agent.

Agent tier list
“Who is the best agent in VALORANT?” might just be a question without an answer.
Turn your head in any direction online to find a different agent tier list, always “up to date” with the latest competitive stats and recent nerf considerations.
Some lists share similarities, others are polar opposites. Most tier lists cite Jett as a solid top-tier choice… others consider her B-list material.
Here’s the dirty little secret… there is no “best” agent in VALO.
Only preferences.
This tier list represents the culmination of those preferences across the VALORANT communities plus the current pro-scene meta.
Keep in mind, top-tier choices can also vary from map to map. A low-tier ranking also doesn’t mean an agent doesn’t have strengths – C-tiers like Reyna and Yoru can be solid agents in the right hands, and despite Astra being C-tier, she's one of the top picks on Split.
S-tier | A-tier | B-tier | C-tier |
---|---|---|---|
Jett | Viper | Brimstone | Phoenix |
Raze | Skye | Deadlock | Reyna |
Fade | Sova | Cypher | Neon |
Killjoy | Sage | Chamber | Yoru |
Breach | Gekko | Astra | |
KAY/O | Harbor |
