Rocket League ranking system explained

Players start their ranking journey in the Bronze tier. As they win matches, they move up through the ranks and divisions. If players lose more matches than they win, they can be demoted to a lower division or rank.

A while ago, the game developers introduced a new update to reduce problems caused by "unintentional smurfing." This issue occurs when a player’s rank is lower than their skill level because they haven't played in a while. Now, when players complete their placement matches, their rank might be adjusted up if the system thinks they started too low.

Rocket League MMR

MMR stands for Matchmaking Rating. It is a number that shows your skill level in Rocket League. Your MMR changes based on whether you win or lose matches. If you win a match, your MMR goes up. If you lose, it goes down.

The MMR system also considers the skill levels of your opponents. If your team's combined MMR is lower than your opponents', you will gain more MMR for a win and lose less for a defeat. If your team's combined MMR is higher, you will gain less for a win and lose more for a defeat.

You can view your MMR with tools like BakkesMod. This tool lets you see your MMR changes after each game. It also shows the MMR of your teammates and opponents during the match.

RL rank distribution

Each season, the game developers share details about the distribution of players across different ranks. Many players are usually in the ranks from Gold III to Platinum II. This distribution helps players see where they stand compared to others.

Here are some details about the distribution of higher ranks from Silver to Grand Champion:

  • Champion to Grand Champion: These ranks include only a small percentage of players. They represent the very top levels of competitive play in Rocket League.
  • Diamond: This rank is a major milestone for many players. Moving up through the divisions in Diamond requires significant skill improvement.

Here’s a simple breakdown of player rankings and Matchmaking Ratings (MMR) from GameChampions. This table shows how many players are in each rank and their MMR ranges from the lowest to the highest division within that rank.

This table lists players from the highest to the lowest ranks. It starts with the most advanced players at the top and goes down to those just starting out. The table is a straightforward way to see how MMR increases as players move up through the ranks. It clearly presents the spread of player skills across different levels in the game, helping you understand where you or others might fit in the competitive landscape.

How to rank up in Rocket League

To move up in the ranks, you need to improve your skills and make smart adjustments to your settings. It is recommended to use settings that are similar to those used by professional players. For example, using the Ball Camera most of the time helps you keep track of the ball.

Here are some tips to help you rank up:

  • Use power hits: It is important to learn how to hit the ball with power. This involves hitting the ball with the corner of your car. This technique is useful for scoring, clearing the ball, and making strong passes.
  • Watch streams: Watching live streams can help you understand better gameplay strategies. Streams show you how experienced players think and move during the game.
  • Focus on recovery and boost management: Knowing how to recover from tough positions and manage your boost are key to playing well. These skills help you keep up with the pace of the game and stay in control.
  • Try new things in casual matches: Playing in casual matches is a good way to practice new techniques. These matches are less stressful than ranked games, so you can experiment more freely.
