Rocket League is the ultra-popular vehicular football game that millions of players globally enjoy. But with this world-wide success, how easy is it to get Rocket League and play for yourself, and perhaps more importantly, is it free? Well, luckily the answer to that question is yes, and we’ll explain why that is and how to get it for free for yourself below.

Is Rocket League free-to-play?

Rocket League is free-to-play and free to download, and has been since 2020. Before this the game had to be bought if you wanted to play it on PC or or Xbox, but was also originally released for free to PlayStation Plus members on PS4 all the way back in 2015.

Today, Rocket League is completely free no matter what platform you play it on; PlayStation, Windows, Xbox, macOS, Linux, or Nintendo Switch.

When did Rocket League go free-to-play?

Rocket League first went free-to-play in 2020 after being purchased by Epic Games from original publisher Psyonix in 2019. The game became free on all platforms at that time, but was also removed from the Steam store, and instead became exclusive on the Epic Games Store on PC.

Previously, Rocket League was free-to-play on the PlayStation 4 when it was released in 2015. It remained free on PlayStation for several years, but was later taken off PlayStation Plus, only to be re-added for free in 2020 along with the rest of the platforms.

Is Rocket League free on Nintendo Switch?

Rocket League is free on Nintendo Switch, but there are certain features that will require you to pay. For instance, to play Rocket League online, you'll need a membership to Nintendo Switch Online. This is a monthly fee that allows you to play online games with other players around the world.
