Are they the ultimate cosmetic item in Fortnite? Depends who you’re asking. And how you’re judging. All we know is if you’re looking for a way to pimp your person with a little extra pizazz, panache, and personality, Fortnite’s collection of Back Blings is just the trick you need.

“Hey waitaminute… aren’t they just backpacks?”

Are they just backpacks?! Don’t be daft. They’re back bling. Sure, they sit on your back. But they’re bling, trust us! And we’re here to show you the rarest of Fortnite’s Back Blings, and keep you at the tippy top of the enviable.

“Not functional, but they are trendy.”
In-Game Description

Do Back Blings do anything?

Besides making you look like a badass and filling your friends and frenemies with jelly when they wish they had yours? Nope. Not a darn thing.

Back Blings are purely cosmetic.

BUT thanks to the limited-time availability of some (like the rare Back Blings we’ve gathered in this here post), some of these backpack-like items do convey instant status upon you.

How do you get Back Blings?

There’s a few ways…

You can buy some in the shop using your V-Bucks. Or you can buy bundles that include Back Blings.

Some, you can get for free, or via special promotions on your gaming platform of choice.

And, of course, there’s the Battle Pass Back Blings, which you earn as rewards for progressing through the seasonal Battle Passes.

What makes a Back Bling rare?

Most of Fortnite’s rarest Back Blings are so rare because they’re not part of the in-game store’s regular stock rotation. They come with an air of exclusivity, and honestly, just like the rarest skins in Fortnite, you might never be able to get your hands on them.

Most of these ultra-rare Back Blings are statements that show the world how long you’ve been playing Fortnite, or that you were there during specific events.

Yup. That means that not all the rare Back Blings are especially cool or flashy. In fact, some of them are pretty plain, all things considered. But don’t knock them for their plainness. These Back Blings are all such uncommon sights that they’re guaranteed to turn heads.

Top 20 rarest Back Blings in Fortnite

Now for the moment you’ve really been waiting for.

If you ever get a chance to grab any of these rare Back Blings, don’t even hesitate.

20. Rift Rock

We’ve only seen the Rift Rock a few times since its release way back in Chapter 1 Season 10… and that still means this Back Bling only just makes the top 20 rarest backpacks in Fortnite.

19. Neo Phrenzy

Owners of the original Neo Phrenzy Back Blings bought either a specific PS4 Slim, DualShock 4 controller, or a Gold Wireless headset to get theirs. Since then, this rare backpack has hit the item shop on only a few rare occasions.

18. Claptrap

Everyone’s favorite sassy Borderlands robot. The Claptrap Back Bling is one of the few rare backpacks released during a promotion and in the item shop. Both were a long time ago now though, making this a rare Back Bling that you’re not likely to be able to get again… but never say never!

17. Blue Shift

A free Back Bling during the second PlayStation Plus Celebration Pack – (shockingly) the only gamers who grabbed this were Fortnite’s PlayStation players who were subscribed to PlayStation Plus. (wild, right?)

16. Ski Bag

Even though the Ski Bag Back Bling was available to buy from the in-game store, it’s way up there on the rarity scale still, thanks to there being 12 different varieties of it!

15. Fractured World

Part of the first Fortnite Crew Pack, back when subscription gaming sounded too scary and new for most people to give it a go.

14. Pursuit

It may not look like much, but hardly anyone snagged this simple Back Bling when they had the chance. If only they’d known how popular Fortnite would become…

13. Skirmish

Included with the Save the World Founder’s pack skins. The founder’s pack wasn’t the most exclusive of offers, but this Back Bling is still pretty darn rare even so.

12. Black Shield

The only players with the Black Shield Back Bling are those who reached level 100 in the Season 2 Battle Pass. Since Fortnite’s player base was so much lower back then, only the longest-standing players have the honor of swaggering around with this backpack.

11. Telemetry

Part of the Double Helix promotion with Nintendo x Fortnite, the Telemetry Back Bling is rarely seen in-game. Which makes sense, since Fortnite is free and the only people who have this Back Bling are those who bought the Nintendo Switch Fortnite bundle.

(those people likely also pay a premium rate for their oxygen…)

10. Squire Shield

A Season 2 Back Bling reward for those who joined Fortnite’s first Battle Pass. All it took to get this Back Bling was reaching the first rung – tier 1.

9. Royale Shield

Same as the Squire Shield, except even rarer since you had to make it to tier 21 in the Battle Pass to get your hands on this rare Back Bling. (dare you to try and spot the difference between this and the Squire Shield!)

8. Ice Mantle

Introduced in Season 7 for players who completed the toughest of the Ice King challenges.

7. Galactic Disc

Not just a rare Back Bling, but a unique one too (visually speaking). Like so many of the rarest Back Blings in Fortnite, this one was available through an exclusive promo only. If you bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or Tab S4 in 2018, you’d have grabbed this backpack. If not, you’ll have to settle for your own bitter jealousy.

6. Rust Bucket

A rare Back Bling if ever we saw one. The Rust Bucket was Epic Games’ way of apologising to Fortnite players during Season 3 for the infamous glitch that stopped people being able to play Fortnite at all.

If you weren’t there, you didn’t get it, and you won’t get the Rust Bucket Back Bling now.

5. Back-Up Plan

Fortnite’s first reward for Twitch Prime users, from the dark days before Twitch became such a global sensation. If you didn’t link your accounts between February and May 2018, you missed out on this one.

4. Swag Bag

Part of the Fortnite Season 3 Starter Pack, the rare Swag Bag Back Bling has never come to the Fortnite shop since, and cost real-world money to get hold of.

3. Penguin

Like the Insignia Back Bling, the only players who’ll have the Penguin Back Bling are those who grabbed the exclusive promo with Tencent, available to Mainland China only during the Chinese launch of Fortnite.

2. Insignia

Unless you were a Fortnite player in China, you wouldn’t have got the Insignia Back Bling. Yes, that makes this one equally as rare as the Penguin Back Bling (but today, a badass look beat cuteness in this ranking).

1. Response Unit

The rarest of the rare Back Blings, originally available by purchasing an NVIDIA graphic card during the special NVIDIA x Fortnite promo in November 2018.
