History of VCT and VALORANT Champions organizations
Riot Games started the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) in 2020. The tour includes several tournaments each year, ending with the VALORANT Champions event. At first, the VCT had three levels: Challengers, Masters, and Champions. Challengers were regional competitions, Masters brought together top teams from around the world, and Champions was the final, global event.
In 2023, the format changed to focus on three international regions: Americas, EMEA, and Pacific. Three franchised leagues were formed in these regions. This change created more intense competition among teams. Riot Games also started to give special attention to China by allowing Chinese teams to enter global tournaments directly. This move aims to grow VALORANT’s popularity in China and add more teams to the competition. Chinese teams surely added a new level of challenge for the Western teams as before that date, they had never competed against each other, which brought mystery in how they would match. In 2024, EDward Gaming won the VALORANT Champions trophy and proved why the region should be competing in international tournaments.
The VCT's organization and management have been crucial to its success. Riot Games works with several esports companies to produce and broadcast the events. As you may know, the company teams up with local partners to support regional tournaments and when it comes to bigger events like VCT Masters and VALORANT Champions, we see even bigger partnerships with big companies all around the world.
