Viego was once a sweetheart but now he’s a wraith thousands of years old, and his kit certainly tells the story of his lore within League of Legends beautifully. He has been a reliable pick up and a load of fun ever since his release, and we recommend the Jungler if you want an awesome all-round champion to play.

He does take a bit of getting used to, however, and that is why we have everything you need to know to get climbing with Viego here in this very article.

Viego’s abilities in League of Legends

Passive: Sovereign’s Domination

Viego channels his inner king and spawns a soul whenever he gets a kill or assist on an enemy champion, after attacking them within 3 seconds of their death.

Viego can then transform into that soul for 10 seconds, which is a copy of whatever champion he helped get the takedown of, and he literally becomes them! He can use all their abilities, items and even gets their stats.

He can also use his ultimate to transform back into Viego, so if you become a champion you don’t know what they do, then you can very quickly become Viego again.

Q: Blade of the Ruined King

Viego’s Q has a passive which empowers his basic attacks after using abilities. When his abilities hit an enemy, they leave a mark, which Viego can consume with his next auto attack. The auto attack strikes twice in one animation, and applies on-hit effects, as well as doing bonus critical strike damage.

The active of the Ruined King’s Q has him stab forward with his blade, thrusting it through enemies, dealing damage which is increased by his critical strike chance. This applies his Q passive to every target hit, so you can easily melt a whole team.

W: Spectral Maw

Viego channels and charges up a stun he can launch forward in a line, stunning the first enemy hit for up to 1.25s - based on the amount of time he channeled the ability for.

Viego is slowed whilst channeling his W, but it also dashes Viego forward as he throws out the maw.

Viego does not have to use the stun as he can channel and then cancel his Spectral Maw, meaning you aren’t always forced to engage once you start charging the ability.

E: Harrowed Path

Viego E

Viego launches a spectre forward, which explodes in a trail of mist, that if it hits a wall, consumes the wall, encompassing every side it hits. Viego becomes invisible within the mist, as well as gaining bonus attack and movement speed.

Attacking an enemy, whether it be monster, minion or enemy champion removes the bonus movement speed, but it keeps the bonus attack speed.

This means Viego was born to be a Jungler in League of Legends as he can easily use the bonus attack speed to clear Jungle camps and take objectives incredibly fast.

Whilst your ganks are also given away by your E, the invisibility means that enemies struggle to tell where you are when you are ganking to properly CC you.

R: Heartbreaker

Viego’s ultimate ability allows him to become briefly unable to be displaced, going untargetable whilst he blinks to a target position. When he lands, he targets the lowest health enemy champion with an AOE circle on the floor. This also slows the target whilst applying on hit effects, meaning that the target is almost certainly dead!

Heartbreaker also knocks back other nearby enemies that are within the AOE circle as Viego lands, meaning he briefly gets a one-on-one with the weakened enemy champion.

When the Ruined King picks up the soul from his Passive, his ultimate is put on a 1.5s cooldown, but using this to become Viego again is essentially a reset for his ultimate.

We recommend killing your first target, becoming them, then killing your second with your ultimate, becoming them, and then repeating the process until you get a pentakill!

When was Viego released in League of Legends?

Viego was released in Patch 11.2, right at the beginning of Season 11. This was on January 21, 2021. His release brought about the massive in-game event called Ruination, which spanned over multiple patches and released the Sentinel and Ruined skin lines.

Viego’s first skin was Lunar Beast Viego, so being released around Chinese New Year was a perfect fit for this skin.

Where is Viego from in League of Legends?

Viego is from Alovédra in Camavor which used to be a kingdom on the eastern continent of Runeterra. Whilst Camavor no longer exists, Viego’s fallen kingdom gave birth to a lot of champions in League of Legends.

These include the likes of Kalista, Gwen and Hecarim just to name a few.

Viego was born in 47 BN, which makes him 1045 years old! Considering we have champions such as Annie who are 9 years old, Riot Games really are spreading champions out across the ages.

Viego’s League of Legends voice actor is Sean Teale. He is actually an actor by trade and has been in multiple movies and TV shows, such as “Who is Erin Carter?” and “The Gifted”.

His voice really brings Viego alive and delivers some awesome voice lines in the most perfect way possible to become the Ruined King.

We have got articles covering almost every champion in the League of Legends roster on our website, so if you want to learn about a new champion other than Viego, stay a while and have a look around!

I graduated with my Esports degree with a 2:1, and a desire to keep going, so this was a perfect step for me, but I still can't get enough of League of Legends when I'm free.
