Katarina is champion that has an insanely high skill ceiling, allowing her to get pentakills every game, even if she is behind. A champion such as a Katarina can afford not to get ahead, as all she really needs is one kill to get snowballing in a game of League of Legends.

This is only possible if you become an ultimate Kat god, however, and newer players who pick her up and first time her in ranked, will probably lose all their LP. But for all of you who do wish to go down this path, we’ve gathered everything you need to know about Katarina so you can improve quick and fast.

Katarina’s abilities in League of Legends

Passive: Voracity

Whenever Katarina gets a kill or a assist within 3 seconds of damaging an enemy, all of her abilities have 3 seconds taken off their current cooldown. This is how you see Katarina players spamming their abilities within fights, and jumping everywhere.

On top of this, whenever Kat stands on a dagger, she spins around dealing magic damage, that scales with both AD and AP, which also applies on-hit effects. Picking up a dagger in this manor reduces the cooldown of her E by almost 100% at max rank too!

Q: Bouncing Blade

The Noxian assassin throws a dagger at the target, dealing magic damage, but the dagger also bounces to two nearby targets as well.

The dagger will land on the ground, behind the last enemy it hit, and roughly opposite where Kat was when she threw the dagger.

W: Preparation

Katarina launches a dagger into the air, giving herself bonus decaying movement speed for 1.25s. This also ghosts her so she can run through a minion wave.

The use of this is to have a dagger to jump back to after diving all in, and picking it up will also reset the cooldown of her E.

E: Shunpo

Katarina jumps to the target, which can be a minion, enemy or dagger, which deals minimal magic damage if they are an enemy.

This is her bread and butter gap closer, and picking up a dagger resets Shunpo, meaning that Katarina can use her W, then E to a target, Q them, stand on that dagger, then E back to the dagger from her W.

That is a lot of daggers, but all you have to do is stand on them for resets of your E, so if you keep to that philosophy, you’ll climb with Katarina in no time.

R: Death Lotus

Katarina has one of the coolest names for an ultimate ability in League of Legends, and Death Lotus is certainly worthy of a name that awesome. Kat channels and spins around in a circle for 2.5 seconds, throwing a dagger at the three closest champions every 0.166s.

These all apply on hit affects, apart from lifesteal, but including grievous wounds. With a cooldown at max rank of 45 seconds without any ability haste, getting a takedown from her passive takes a considerable chunk of this cooldown away, meaning Katarina has her ultimate for every fight she needs it!

When was Katarina released in League of Legends?

Katarina was introduced into League of Legends in Patch 0.9.25.21, which is a bit longer of a patch name than we have now. This was on September 19, 2009, meaning the Sinister Blade has been on the Rift for 14 years now!

Katarina is so old she didn’t have a skin when she came out, and her first one came a couple of months later, on November 20, 2009, which was Mercenary Katarina, even though this was actually her classic skin on release.

Katarina hails from the capital city of Noxus, Noxus Prime and the Immortal Bastion, and she still lives there to this day. A Noxian through and through, Kat is one of the most senior and trusted assassins the Noxian empire has ever had in its service.

Katarina’s exact age is unknown, but a rough age is recorded of 26 to 31 years old. This means she was born between 966 AN and 971 AN. This might seem young, but many forget Katarina has been skilled with the blade and an assassin since childhood, meaning she has plenty of experience killing the enemies of Noxus, especially during the Ionian war.

Katarina’s voice actress in League of Legends is an amazingly talented woman named Tara Platt. She also voices Battle Queen Katarina, one of Kat’s best skins, as well as the Noxian blade mistress in Legends of Runeterra too.

She has also voiced a lot of other characters, such as Yuri Watanabe in the Spider-Man game alongside bringing our not-so-lovable Noxian assassin to life.

Katarina is not the only assassin, or champion in League of Legends, and because of that we have guides for a lot of the other champions you can take onto Summoner’s Rift. Some of these are:

Hi, my name is Eddie, I am a full-time writer and short-form video editor, with a degree in Esports! My main games are VALORANT and League of Legends, so you could say that I am at the beck and call of Riot Games! I have worked previously for a few different websites, doing various roles, such as writing, editing, and even voiceovers, but here at THESPIKE, I am an out-and-out article writer, so I can really get as much content out as I can! I graduated with my Esports degree with a 2:1, and a desire to keep going, so this was a perfect step for me, but I still can't get enough of League of Legends when I'm free.
