VCT 2022 - Stage 1 - Masters Reykjavik: G2 Esports
G2 Esports made a great comeback during VCT 2022 - EMEA - Stage 1 - Challengers - Main Event and clinched the top seed of EMEA after FunPlus Phoenix’s situation. Here is everything you need to know about G2 Esports!
Qualifiers
Before qualifying for the VCT 2022 - EMEA - Stage 1 - Challengers - Main Event Group Stage, G2 Esports had to prove their worth and earn a spot by eliminating all their opponents during VCT 2022 - Europe - Stage 1 - Closed Qualifier 1. However, the famous European team failed to get past Alliance and had to start all over from VCT 2022 - Europe - Stage 1 - Open Qualifier 2. Luckily, they managed to win every single game in the process of qualifying for VCT 2022 - Europe - Stage 1 - Closed Qualifier 2. With Cista "keloqz" Wassim after a long time, G2 Esports won the upper bracket final against EXCEL to compete in the biggest league in the region.
Group Stage
They made an awful start to the VCT 2022 - EMEA - Stage 1 - Challengers - Main Event groups with a 2-1 loss against Fnatic. During this time, Oscar Cañellas "m1xwell" Colocho was benched but he joined the main roster during the group games and G2’s performance improved a lot. In the meantime, keloqz left the organization to join Team Heretics, as covered. G2 Esports secured back-to-back wins to clinch the second seed in Group B with three wins and two losses.
Playoffs
The playoffs journey started with an upsetting loss against Team Liquid, one of their biggest rivals in the tournament alongside Fnatic. TL looked much better in general and closed out the series with a score of 2-1. G2’s journey continued from the lower bracket where they swept M3 Champions. We haven’t seen it much but Auni "AvovA" Chahade carried his team in general statistics apart from his clutch mission playing style. After reaching the lower bracket semi finals, G2 came up against Team Liquid once again but this time the scenario was different. Ocelote’s team demolished TL in two maps, both resulting in a score of 13-4. G2 Esports dominated both maps to reach the upper bracket final and face Fnatic. At that point, they managed to guarantee themselves a spot at VCT 2022 - Stage 1 - Masters Reykjavík. However, G2 didn’t stop as we witnessed another sweep by them, 3-0. Especially with Žygimantas "nukkye" Chmieliauskas’s dominance, they made it look easy before reaching the tournament finals. G2 Esports reached the grand final with back-to-back sweeps but failed to keep their form up against FunPlus Phoenix. FPX didn’t make the same mistakes with FNC and TL and closed out the series in four games.
Preferred Maps
G2 Esports’ most picked map during VCT 2022 - EMEA - Stage 1 - Challengers - Main Event was Icebox. The European representative picked Icebox seven times and won six of them, losing the only one against FunPlus Phoenix in the grand final. However, their first-ever map in the tournament was also Icebox but it was picked by Fnatic and G2 lost the game after 21 rounds. Looking at all-time statistics, they have played Ascent 70 times and won 64.4% while on the defending side.
