Tejo Sparks Controversy as VCT Kickoff Looms
Riot Games has once again shaken up the VALORANT competitive scene by introducing Tejo, a powerful new Initiator agent, just days before the highly anticipated VCT Kickoff tournament. With limited preparation time, professional teams are scrambling to adapt their strategies to this meta-altering addition.
The decision to allow Tejo’s inclusion in the tournament has sparked significant debate within the competitive community, with players and coaches scrambling to adapt to the new meta.
Kickoff Controversy: A Meta Shift at the Worst Time
The VCT Kickoff tournament, scheduled to begin in less than a week (depending on the region), will host 12 elite teams from each region vying for an early advantage in the season. Riot's decision to include Tejo—a potentially meta-defining agent with a disruptive kit emphasizing map control—has left teams with minimal preparation time.
The backlash has been palpable, with professional players and coaches openly criticizing the timing of this decision. Fnatic’s former coach Martin "Anderzz" Schelasin voiced his frustration:
“Tejo being released at this power level and teams having around a week to implement him for Kickoff melts my brain a bit.”
Similarly, Nikita "Derke" Sirmitev from Vitality sarcastically noted:
“I love practicing for months just for the game to change just before the season starts. Happens every year a few times, whether it’s a new agent or map.”
For fans, the chaos adds an unpredictable and exciting element to the tournament. However, for professionals, months of meticulous preparation could be undermined by a single new addition.
Riot's Justification: Aiming for Consistency
The Head of VCT APAC, Jake Sin, defended the decision, explaining that Riot aims to keep the competitive scene aligned with the live game:
“Our goal is for the sport to feature the exact version of the game that everyone can play, as closely as possible.”
While teams were informed about Tejo’s potential inclusion as early as December, they only received early access to the agent and Patch 10.0 on January 6th—just days before the tournaments.
Sin acknowledged that Pacific teams did not formally object to the decision but admitted that it "doesn’t mean they are all happy about it."
Hector "FrosT" Rosario, head coach of TALON, emphasized that organizations might not always reflect the sentiments of their players and coaching staff.
Uneven Playing Field: Why Is China Excluded?
In a surprising twist, Tejo will not be included in the VCT 2025 - China Kickoff event, raising questions about why the region has been granted an exception. Riot Games has yet to provide a clear explanation, leaving fans and analysts to speculate about the rationale.
What Lies Ahead?
Despite the backlash, Riot Games seems firm on its decision, leaving teams with no choice but to adapt. As the tournament nears, fans eagerly await to see how the pros will incorporate Tejo into their strategies—or counter his disruptive potential.
The decision may be controversial, but it guarantees an unpredictable and dynamic kickoff to the season. Whether this gamble pays off for Riot Games or backfires, only time will tell.
Stay tuned for what promises to be an explosive start to the 2025 VALORANT competitive season.
