Report: NRG to enter VALORANT with Chet Singh as coach
According to a report published on September 30th, 2020, by Rush B Media, NRG Esports are planning to enter the North American VALORANT scene in short order. Rush B alleges that the organization has intentions to sign recently retired 100 Thieves Counter-Strike: Global Offensive coach Chet “Chet” Singh as coach, and has reached out to former Gen.G player Damien “daps” Steele and current Gen.G player Sam “s0m” Oh to begin their roster.
Chet is quite a storied coach in North American Counter-Strike, having worked with major organizations such as Counter Logic Gaming, OpTic Gaming, NRG themselves, Evil Geniuses, and most recently 100 Thieves. An interview with HLTV has him linked with VALORANT teams since May. On September 28th, Chet announced his retirement from CS:GO, leading many to speculate about him finally making the move to VALORANT.
Daps, who has competed in Counter-Strike since 2012 on organizations such as Team Liquid, OpTic, Splyce, NRG, Cloud9, and most recently Gen.G, is another recent exit from the scene. On September 11th, he announced his departure from Gen.G, and left it open to speculation where he might be headed.
Lastly, s0m is a newer Counter-Strike player, entering the professional scene in 2017. He played for Complexity and Team Envy, before joining daps on Gen.G in December of 2019. S0m is currently still contracted with Gen.G and actively playing Counter-Strike for them, making his potential switch to the VALORANT scene the most interesting of the three.
This is all among the backdrop of NRG higher-ups repeatedly denying the organization’s potential involvement in VALORANT, with co-CEO Andy Miller recently stating that it is “too early” to invest. If true, however, the money and success the VALORANT scene has seen may be persuading the organization to reconsider. Certainly, if this report all comes true, NRG will have the makings of a fantastic roster, with a solid first 2 members akin to the current lineup of NYFU.
If this report is accurate, NRG Esports' roster will be:
Damien "daps" Steele Sam "s0m" Oh Chet "Chet" Singh (Coach)
