OpTic and FPX book the last playoff tickets
On the last day of the Group Stage, OpTic Gaming took down KRÜ Esports and FunPlus Phoenix swept NORTHEPTION to qualify for the playoffs stage.
FunPlus Phoenix vs NORTHEPTION
In the opening game of the day, NORTHEPTION picked Fracture and the competition began. FunPlus Phoenix started the game with a pistol-round win. Andrey "Shao" Kiprsky picked up 3 kills and Pontus "Zyppan" Eek helped him with 2 kills. The first half continued with both teams winning consecutive rounds, 5 for FPX and 5 for NORTHEPTION. With the extra 2 rounds they had in the beginning, FPX led the half, 7-5. Ardis "ardiis" Svarenieks stepped up in the later stages of the game and contributed with 12 kills and 2 first bloods. NORTHEPTION’s defensive efforts were not bad, especially with Daichi "Derialy" Doi’s individual performance with 14 kills and a 1.57 rating. NORTHEPTION made an impressive start to the second half by winning the first two rounds but FPX won the upcoming 5 rounds and reached the 12-round mark. The CIS representatives closed ou the game after 10 second-half rounds, 13-9 on the scoreboard. The heroes of the first half, Zyppan and ardiis had the best ratings with 1.41 and 1.38 respectively.
FunPlus Phoenix’s map pick was Ascent and they held the advantage in the series by taking down their opponents on the opposing map pick. The first half of the second half ended with FPX’s dominance. The CIS team won the first two rounds but NORTHEPTION rapidly answered back with a 3-round winning streak. After that point FPX sat behind the wheel and won all the rounds until the end of the half. Andrey "Shao" Kiprsky and ardiis led the first half with 14 and 16 kills and the Latvian Chamber also held a 1.82 rating on the attacking side. NORTHEPTION made a great start to the second half by winning 4 rounds in a row but they couldn’t prevent the sweep. FunPlus Phoenix won the map with a score of 13-9 thanks to their first-half dominance and reached the playoffs. ardiis finished the game with a solid 1.75 rating and 6 first bloods on Chamber.
KRÜ Esports vs OpTic Gaming
The second and last match of the day was against the LATAM representatives KRÜ Esports and the latest Masters winners, OpTic Gaming. The NA team chose Split and had a great performance, especially in the second half. KRÜ Esports’ defense was decent as they grabbed 7 rounds in the first half but they failed to shift their performance to the attacking side. Nicolas "Klaus" Ferrari’s Viper was the main factor in KRÜ’s performance on defense as the Argentinian player held a 1.54 rating and grabbed 13 kills. On the other side of the competition, Jimmy "Marved" Nguyen kept his team alive with a 1.57 rating and 14 kills. The second half was pure dominance as OpTic Gaming did not lose a single round. They managed to stop KRÜ’s attacks for 8 rounds and eliminated all the LATAM members in 7 of them. Marved held an insane 2.48 rating on defense with a 5 K/D and Jaccob "yay" Whiteaker followed his steps with a 1.95 rating and 12 kills. Both players grabbed 3 first bloods and OpTic won the opening map, 13-7.
KRÜ Esports’ last chance was Haven, their pick of the day. However, OpTic Gaming continued their dominance from the previous map and demolished their opponents in the first half. OpTic Gaming won 10 rounds on the attacking side and only lost 2. Marved stepped up again with a 1.88 rating and 14 kills but this time with Omen in his hands. KRÜ Esports managed to pick up a couple of rounds in the second half to stay in the competition but the last champions were just better. OpTic Gaming closed out the series after taking their opponents down with a score of 13-6 on Haven. Marved finished the game with a 1.60 rating and 19 kills. The Canadian player dominated the day and helped his team win the game.
