G2 Esports sweep Fnatic to face FPX in VCT 2022: EMEA Stage 1 Grand Final
G2 Esports outclassed Fnatic in the Lower Bracket Final to face FunPlus Phoenix in the Grand Final. Despite losing the Lower Bracket Final, Fnatic has still qualified for the VCT 2022 - Stage 1 - Masters Reykjavík alongside G2 Esports and FunPlus Phoenix to represent EMEA.
G2 Esports vs Fnatic
The first map of the series was Breeze, which was G2 Esports’ pick. Fnatic managed to defend the bomb sites in the first two rounds but G2 Esports rapidly bounced back with a 3-round winning streak. Unexpectedly, G2 won six rounds in the first half as they executed their attacking strategies almost perfectly. Fnatic’s Nikita "Derke" Sirmitev had a one-man show on Jett, securing 15 kills and holding a 1.62 rating with 5 first blood in the first half but he didn’t get the help he needed from his teammates. G2 Esports picked up six rounds on the attacking side and secured a huge advantage before going into the second half. G2’s defense strategies were also perfectly executed as their attacking moves in the first half. Fnatic failed to plant the spike or even play post-plant scenarios. Žygimantas "nukkye" Chmieliauskas’s 12-kill Jett performance played a huge role in G2’s 13-9 win on Breeze. Jake "Boaster" Howlett stepped up in the second half with his Skye, grabbing 12 kills to his name but he failed to carry his team on his shoulders.
Fnatic chose Icebox as the second map. Normally, we were used to seeing G2 Esports picking the map for the past couple of weeks but today it was Fnatic’s turn. However, there was a reason that G2’s constant map pick was Icebox as they showed it once again, especially in the first half. The European team started on the defending side and won four rounds in the beginning to get the mental momentum on their side. Fnatic won the fifth round and showed a pulse but it didn’t last long. G2 Esports closed out the first half with a score of 10-2. The Lithuanian star, nukkye, stepped up with his Sova, securing 17 kills in 12 rounds and holding a 1.93 rating on the top of an insane 4.25 K/D. Their defensive tactics were brilliant from the start until the very end and Fnatic failed to break through it. Derke picked up 3 first bloods but all those kills weren’t enough. G2 started the second half on the attacking side and won the map after a quick 4-round win streak. Johan "Meddo" Lundborg has also joined his Lithuanian teammate to carry G2 to the third game.
G2’s second map pick was Ascent. Ocelote’s team started their third-game battle on the attacking side and picked up eight rounds in the first half. We were used to seeing Oscar Cañellas "m1xwell" Colocho on Chamber but this time he picked Jett and secured 13 kills during G2’s 8-4 first-half win. Žygimantas "nukkye" Chmieliauskas gave his all to help his Spanish Jett carry the first 12-rounds by picking up 11 kills and holding a 1.42 rating on Sova. Just like the first two games, Derke tried his best to keep his team in the game but he failed to achieve the goal. Fnatic managed to get back into the game on the attacking side but G2 Esports stole a couple of rounds to keep themselves ahead on the scoreboard. Fnatic’s post-plant strategies were pretty good but they made easy mistakes in the first stages of some rounds which cost them a lot. G2 Esports made fewer mistakes on the defending side. The competition was very close until the very end. In the end, G2 Esports won the map after 23 rounds to put an end to the series. Fnatic failed to prevent a sweep and they have also failed to reach the Grand Final.
