EMEA’s most dominant team at Copenhagen, Fnatic
After a very successful performance in VCT 2022 - EMEA - Stage 2 - Challengers - Main Event, Fnatic’s eye is on a bigger prize, the VCT 2022 - Stage 2 - Masters Copenhagen trophy. They will collide with the best teams in all the regions. Can they continue their dominance and win the trophy? Let’s take a deeper look at their performance in the second stage.
Group Stage
Just like the previous stage, Fnatic had magnificent performances during the Group Stage. With Emir "Alfajer" Ali Beder joining from [team=] and Enzo "Enzo" Mestari becoming a full-time player, their chemistry was on another level. Their Group Stage run started with an important win over FunPlus Phoenix, the last champions of the competition. That win showed how competitive they were going to be in the upcoming stages of the tournament. Secondly, they faced an easier opponent on paper, OG LDN Utd, and did not make any mistakes, 13-4 on Haven and 13-0 on Icebox. Nikita "Derke" Sirmitev had a magnificent performance in the game with 45 kills on Chamber. Thanks to Derke and Alfajer's insane forms, sweeping Acend was quite easy for the team. Fnatic closed out the Group Stage by sweeping FOKUS and taking down G2 Esports with a score of 2-1. They won 10 maps throughout the stage and only lost 2. The last G2 match was very close but Alfajer and Derke once again stepped up with 120 kills combined in 3 maps. The duo clearly had the biggest impact on the team’s success. Fnatic won all their games and they were the only undefeated team in both groups.
Playoffs
The Playoffs started in the second round for the only undefeated team in the tournament, Fnatic. Firstly, they had to face FunPlus Phoenix again, but this time in the Upper Bracket Semi Final. Just like the group's opener, the result did not change and Fnatic moved onto the Upper Bracket Final by taking down the CIS representatives after 3 maps, 2-1. On top of reaching the Upper Bracket Final, Fnatic have also booked their Denmark ticket as they have qualified for VCT 2022 - Stage 2 - Masters Copenhagen. The only obstacle between them and the VCT 2022 - EMEA - Stage 2 - Challengers - Main Event Grand Finals was Guild Esports. After two very close matches, Fnatic swept their opponents and became the first Grand Finalists of the tournament. They faced FPX for the first time since the start of the tournament but this time it was for the biggest prize in the region. The CIS representatives were the reigning champions of the region and they had shown impressive performances both in the Group Stage and also the playoffs. However, Fnatic’s Alfajer played his heart out in the Grand Final and secured 79 kills in 3 maps as well as holding a 1.54 rating. Fnatic won the trophy after a great competition, 3-0. Even though it was a sweep, two of the maps were very close. 15-13 on Split, 13-5 on Icebox, and 15-13 on Haven.
