Closing out the VCT 2022 - EMEA - Stage 1 - Challengers - Main Event group stage without a single win pushed BIG to the VCT 2022 - EMEA Promotion Tournament. The German esports organization proved themselves with a sweep over Surreal Esports to join FOKUS for the second stage of EMEA Challengers.

Bind

BIG had the first choice and they picked Bind to make a strong start to the series. The first half ended in a tie as Surreal Esports failed to execute their defending strategies. On the other hand, BIG had a great showing on the attacking side. Karel "Twisten" Ašenbrener and Nico "Obnoks" Garczarczyk secured 22 kills in total, 11 each and on top of his 11 kills Twisten secured 4 first bloods to open up the bomb sites for his teammates. Emir "Alfajer" Ali Beder’s Raze was the main factor in Surreal’s six wins in the first half but the Turkish duelist couldn’t carry his team to grab an advantage before going into the second half. BIG’s defending strategies were also on point. The experienced Sova player, Fatih "gob b" Dayik showed his skills in the second half, grabbing 13 kills to reach 21 kills in total and also a solid 1.91 K/D. Surreal’s attacking side strategies weren’t optimal as BIG closed out the first map with a score of 13-10. They made the difference during the second half and made fewer mistakes than their opponent in their map pick.

Icebox

Surreal Esports wanted to show their strengths after losing the first game and they picked Icebox to prove themselves. BIG had different plans. The German team destroyed Surreal in the first half, winning ten rounds and only letting the bomb explode one time. Karel "Twisten" Ašenbrener’s Jett performance was on another level as the Czech player held a 1.74 rating and an incredible 2.5 K/D. He had 15 kills at the end of the first half and the closest Surreal Esports player was Alfajer again. Surreal bounced back at the beginning of the second half, grabbing a seven-round winning streak but BIG stopped it with three wins in a row. Unfortunately for Surreal Esports, those three wins meant the end of the game as the German team reached 13 rounds in total. Surreal looked much stronger on the defending side as expected but they failed to finish the job. The second map ended with a score of 13-9 and it was very hard for the Turkish team to make a comeback after that point.

Fracture

Lastly, BIG picked Fracture as the third map of the series to complete the sweep. Surreal Esports aren’t very familiar with the map as they haven’t played it in the past couple of weeks. BIG started the last map on the attacking side and ended the first half with eight wins. Just like the first two games, Twisten was the hero of the first half, grabbing 16 kills and helping his team with a solid 351 ACS. On the Surreal Esports’ side, Alfajer stepped up again and played the biggest role in their four wins. BIG made a great start to the second half by winning the pistol round. It was very important for the German side as you expect the attacking side to play aggressively and win these kinds of rounds. Surreal showed some pulse and grabbed six rounds in the second half but Twisten was just on another level. The Czech player finished the game with 27 kills and a 1.53 rating. BIG completed the sweep and guaranteed themselves a spot for the upcoming EMEA Challengers tournament. Nico "Obnoks" Garczarczyk was Twisten’s biggest helper throughout the series and the German player secured 21 kills in the last game.

FOKUS had an amazing and undefeated run throughout the event, an unlikely team to come out on top given the experience of some of the teams involved. The mixed European team were up against BIG in the upper bracket final where they had a swift 2-0 victory to qualify for VCT EMEA Stage 2.
